Upgrading the Honouliuli Wastewater Treatment Plant with Hensel Phelps and the Grove GMK5250XL-1

At Western Pacific Crane & Equipment, we take pride in being part of projects that significantly enhance our community’s infrastructure and development, such as the recent Honouliuli Wastewater Treatment Plant upgrade, a transformative $536 million initiative to elevate the plant to full secondary treatment capacity. Located in southwestern Oahu and built in 1978, this treatment plant features a deep ocean outfall extending 1.76 miles offshore to a depth of 200 feet. This outfall system, consisting of 19,719 linear feet combined of land and ocean outfall pipe, emphasizes the plant’s vast service area.

Achieving Clean Water Act Compliance and Sustainability

The upgrade of the Honouliuli Wastewater Treatment Plant is not just an infrastructural improvement but a stride towards sustainability and compliance with environmental protections. “This project is a testament to the city’s dedication to improving infrastructure, embracing sustainability, and ensuring a cleaner, healthier future for Honolulu,” stated Mayor Rick Blangiardi in a news release. This major upgrade, commemorated by Blangiardi on May 10, 2024, fulfills a 2010 consent decree, marking a significant step towards compliance with EPA Clean Water Act requirements.

The project has been awarded to Hensel Phelps Construction Company and will be completed in three planned phases over a six-year period. These phases will focus on the installation and testing of electrical, structural, and mechanical systems. Additionally, the project will involve grading, developing the infrastructure, underground piping and the decommissioning and demolition of the existing facilities.

The Role of Western Pacific Crane & Equipment

Integral to the success of this project is the material handling solution supplied by Western Pacific Crane & Equipment to Hensel Phelps Construction. The Grove GMK5250XL-1 all-terrain crane epitomizes strength in engineering with its high capacity and the longest boom in its class, combined with a compact footprint and excellent maneuverability.

The GMK5250XL-1 Grove all-terrain crane provided support for Hensel Phelps’ wall-form crew to keep up with concrete pours. Following this, it will continue to be utilized to move all necessary materials for the remainder of the project.

The Grove 5250XL-1 All-Terrain Crane: A 300 US Ton Heavy-Duty Mover

This massive crane offers great flexibility, featuring a conveniently high reach of 358 ft. Before this wastewater treatment plant application, it was used to disassemble a tower crane onsite.

Key Advantages of the GMK5150XL-1 Include:

  • High capacity, lifting up to 300 US tons
  • Longest boom in its class, 257.5 ft with 358 ft max tip height
  • Compact dimensions, at 9 ft wide and 50.5 ft overall length
  • MEGATRAK independent suspension with All-Wheel-Steering
  • Features the latest emission standards, significantly reducing diesel consumption by 30%
